My apologies for not responding to the initial advice. I sent my first post
to the list and then promptly left for an extended holiday. Not a very "list
friendly" thing to do!

Glad to confirm that it's not the cable. And yes the card does seem to be
working as advertised.

Yes, I've switched hub ports and verified that the hub has activity lights
indicating a good connection. It's registering the connection and that it's
a 100baseT connection.

I'm hopeful that this turns out to be the case. These are homemade cables. I
did the plug connections and crimping myself. In fact, I even put new ends
on both sides to be sure I hadn't screwed up the first batch.

It does seem plausible that it could be the RJ-45 connector itself. Despite
the fact that I can take my laptop or another Mac into the room and make a
successful connection doesn't eliminate the possibility that it's the
combination of this particular Asante card and the RJ-45 connector. I'll
check this out this weekend.

Again, I apologize for seeming indifferent to everyone's responses to my
initial post. I sincerely appreciate any input that the list can offer!
