"Currently on my S900/DP200 under OS 8.1 (Just
received this machine,
installed the OS off the Umax System disk) When I
try to place a picture on
the desktop using the "Desktop Pictures" Control
Panel, nothing happens.
The preview pane shows a magenta screen regardless
of the picture I select,
and the desktop pattern still shows up even when
I've selected a picture."

Try rebuilding the desktop and zapping PRAM. Maybe
run Nortons and/or disk warrior. It is possible
that some of the bundle bits are off rendering the
photos un-usable via corruptions.

Is it possible that a dual monitor set-up is
stopping you? If you are using 2 monitors, Try
turning that off till you sort out a single monitor.

Good luck
