Hi folks, I just wanted to report a successful upgrade to my daughter's S900, partly because it's fun to share good news and partly because it may add to the general knowledge base of what works and what doesn't on our machines. What I added was OWC's 3-port firewire card and an OWC Mercury Elite 80-gig firewire external drive.
The card went into the 4th PCI slot from the top (just south of the bridge). The first two slots are occupied by my original Twin Turbo graphics card and Miles U2W SCSI card. All in all, the installation was pretty smooth. I did have to do some cuda and zap-pram voodoo when I first booted up. One of my 9.1 volumes was unable to see the FW volumes until I added the correct FireWire enabler extension. I was able to quickly backup and verify all four of my internal volumes. As many on this list know, I am not able to boot from the FW on the S900. I did install (Carbon Copy Cloner) a 10.1.5 and a 9.1 volume that I am able to boot from on my own PowerPC G4 tower. I now have a swift backup solution for both my family machines. My setup in brief: S900 with PowerLogix G3/500; 480 MB RAM. OS 10.1.5 (on 9-gig attached to Miles U2W) with 9.2.2 Classic on separate volume (1/2 of 2-gig on internal narrow SCSI) Two 9.1 volumes (one on 1/2 of 2-gig narrow, one on 500 MB drive on narrow SCSI) Miles U2W SCSI card, Twin Turbo, OWC Firewire in PCI slots 1,2,4. all kinds of other stuff daisied to external SCSI.
