My XLR8 went without a hitchin my S900. I also installed one in an 8500 without incident. True, they are harder to set up than a Sonnet, but with the Sonnet's you also can't change the bus speed (my S900 runs 56MHz instead of 45MHz). You also "can't" overclock the processor on a Sonnet. That's not to say that Sonnet's suck, they are great for people who want minimum fuss. To paraphrase Apple: "Sonnet, the upgrade for the rest of us." Me, I like speed and getting my hands dirty.
As for OSX. XLR8 made a late beta version 2.6.0. I have it, it came with my Carrier ZIF when I got it from OWC a few months ago. I think it dies at 10.1.2. I'm not 100% on that though. The readme date is 9/24/01, that should give you a clue. Unfortunately, XLR8 went under before they could finalize the software. The Powerlogix software is great though. It runs flawlessly with the XLR8 cards. As for the powersupplies. Speculative processing does nothing of the sort. The onlything spec processing will do is pre-fetch instructions. The worst it will do is crash your machine and corrupt some files on your HD if you are running OS9. Everyone agrees, (even mentioned in some manuals) that you should NOT have Spec Processing on under OS9. The problem doesn't occur if you are running OSX. This is a known problem with ALL G3 UPGRADES in old world machines (except the Beige G3). Don't get me wrong, I swear by PowerLogix upgrades, and I love that PL doesn't stop you from using their software with other brands of cards. Talk about nice people! But I wanted the XLR8 Carrier cards so I could upgrade to a G4 when I could afford it. Let's face it ZIFs are a lot cheaper than daughter cards. I'm very saddened by the loss of XLR8, I like their stuff. If you like the Sonnet, stick with it, they do good work too. But don't bad mouth a device that had one out of the 2,346 different things that could go wrong, did. If you want, ask for help, we'll be more than happy to give. Now, hopefully I did this without sounding like a conceited @$#hole trying to tear you a new one for saying XLR8 sucks:) -Robyn On Thursday, January 16, 2003, at 05:32 AM, Will Schou wrote: > Good grief ;-) > You need some help getting things set up!
