I had this same problem with a Traxdata 4/2/6 cdrw and the Toshiba
12x cd rom which originally came with my Umax - especially with self
burned cd's - no mount no icon no nothing very frustrating and I thought
it was the end of the device life.
So I stripped them both out - removed the front bezels and the upper
casings and cleaned the laser lens with a damp cotton bud and a
magnifying glass - worked like a charm and revived both devices - I am
still using the Traxdata but I swapped the Toshiba for a 24x Matshita.
Care is required as the lens is on a self focussing arm - but I've
done it twice to the Traxdata with no ill effects.
