Hi Ted,

OS 8.6 was never available as a commercial release. A handful were
distributed as part of a free upgrade for those who purchased Apple hardware
immediately before its release, hence its scarcity. The rest of us
downloaded the upgrade for OS 8.5, which shouldn't be too hard to find.

Hi Paul,

Apple typically offers a $20 CD for folks who can't or don't want to
download a major OS update. I have a few of them, but I don't know for sure
that happened with 8.6. I strongly suspect that it did, however. Often these
CDs contain 'extras' that are not included in the download.

Some machines shipped with 8.6 although the iMac I bought on the release
date had 8.5 installed. I am pretty sure (like you) that there was never a
general retail version.
