Hi all

I have an Astra 6450 firewire scanner, which I"m trying to use with the
Mac. However when I plug it in, the whole system stops. I can move
the mouse, but that's all. So for instance I plug it in, then click on
a program's icon-I will be waiting forever with no activity from the
computer. As soon as I unplug the firewire cable from the scanner, the
system resumes its activities.

I read with some excitement that Viewscan would work with this scanner,
so I downloaded it, then installed every stick of RAM I had till I just
barely have enough to run it, and the program runs but of course can't
find the scanner. The firewire card works fine with an iBot as well as
my DV camcorder so I think the card's OK. Could it be a PCI slot issue
(its plugged into a lower slot)? I've tried it with just the scanner as
well as with the iBot plugged in at the same time. If I activate the
iBot with bTV Pro it works, and as soon as I plug in the scanner, the
video image from the iBot gets jumpy as if its being interrupted.

So here are my questions: Will a new firewire card specifically
advertised as being Mac compatible do the trick?
Do I need to plug it into an upper PCI slot? Am I missing something
else? (I have no other devices which can use this cable, so no way to
test it however its a brand new cable)?

Thanks as always

Bolton
