Dear List,
I know it's unfair to introduce a slightly off topic machine
problem, but pleading my two S-900's and the excellence of the responses
here, I wonder if anyone can help my wife who is working on our original
Mac, an 8500. In order to help her out I bought two sticks of 128 meg
memory from OWC and an ATA 66 with an eighty gig IBM ATA drive, also from
OWC. The machine is running 9.1 and has a G-4 Powrlogix in it and a
Firewire/USB drive. After installation we began to experience system bomb
after system bomb. We tried everything, trashing desktop, resetting Cuda,
P-ram, Disk Warrior, Norton, and I ran Gauge Pro to almost two thousand
iterations without seeing any problem in the ram. I may have temporarily
messed things up, by not installng the Altivec and G-4 profiler correctly
but we reinstalled. Now Photoshop 7 and my wife's image reader from her
Cannon camera keep freezing, and there are numerous freezes in Microsoft
Word as well. I put a 9.1 system folder on the IBM drive so I could start
up from it as well but with limited extensions.
This nightmare has cost my wife and me a week of work when
deadlines are pressing. Any suggestions? As some of you, to your sadness
know, the 8500 is a real bear to take apart-it makes the S-900 disassembly
look like child's play.
By the way, if I give up on the 8500 and try to put that IBM in my
S-900 where do I get a sled for it? It was an unpleasant surprise to
realize that one could not install the drive that came from OWC without one
and even the sled we got at a local Apple dealer only fits two of the IBM's
screw holes.
Thanks in advance.
Mark
