Yes, I to think this could be a fun and not too expensive project! I
ran to my local (40 miles round trip is that local?) Fry's electronic
store this evening. I can't believe how many ATI video cards there are!
They had maybe 12 or so but don't carry the 7000 PCI 64 mb version. I
know from reading forums in the past that no other ATI PCcard has been
made to work in a Mac. ATI has been very good at making sure they get
their premium price for Mac cards. They do have the 7000 32mb PCI card
for like $59.00 but it hasn't worked in the past so didn't get it.
I've done some on line checking and the correct card can be bought as
cheap as $58.00 plus shipping. Circuit City which is as least a western
US chain store (maybe nationwide?) has them for local pickup at $69.99
website also says no hassle and no hidden charges returns. So after
thinking things over I may go pick one up tomorrow and see how it goes.
The kit for flashing the card also lets you re-flash back into a PC
card just as it was to start with.
This is also the first time a firmware flash utility has been made that
works with ATI cards so this could work with the cheaper ATI 7000 PCI
32. mb card at $59.00 or less it is less then half the price of the Mac
7000 card and is exactly the same card except for the firmware. So this
could be fun if it works! I'll let you guys know how it goes if I end
up doing it. Will S
PS. bestbuy.com only lists maybe 3 ATI crds and not this one.
