What is the least fragile CDR for backup copies. The spindle from OWC had
disks where you could already see the backing flake. This seems outrageous
in a medium that was first advertised as being perfect for archival work.

Mark -

After reading up on different dye technology used for CD-R media, I
settled on Verbatim for archving (Photoshop and DCS camera files.)
For my personal use, it's the most cost effective media while not
compromising long term stability.
They use their own dye technology (Azo Blue) which is one of three or
four used in the industry and is suppose to be close behind the gold in
terms of reliability.
I did use the gold stuff from Mitsui, which is suppose to be one of the
best, but for personal use I could not justify the
cost. (So far my experience has been with only Verbatim and Mitsui.)
I buy the Verbatims in 50-pack cases, either in the rainbow colored
cases or the regular jewel cases, mostly from Sam's Club. I have seen
these offered at other stores but not in the steady supply that I see at Sam's.
Never bought any in spindles, but I noticed Verbatims are available as such.

It's been a while since I read up on this, but I do recall the greenish
dye is the least reliable.
I've settled on 50-cents per disc, sometimes cheaper, but bargain
basement deals on other brands are ignored.
