Stefan,

In general terms, this error indicates that the Matshita is being asked to
do something it doesn't know how to do. This is a known conflict between the
Apple CD driver version 5.3.1--and by extension, the "hacked" and FWB
drivers that are modeled after it--and just about every CD writing software.
The real mystery is why it worked for so long.

There are several solutions, all of which involve removing the hacked driver
first.

If it works, the simplest is to leave a bootable CD-Rom in the tray of the
reader at all times. This will read the appropriate Apple driver from the
disc and load it into the System heap at startup. You can then remove the
disc and insert any other; the driver will remain "loaded" until the next
startup. Two possible pitfalls here: the driver may not load anyway--not
something I've experienced personally, but noted on this list; the driver is
not the swiftest at audio extraction--but then again, neither is the drive.
Using the Toast "CD Reader" extension, that Yamaha should prove to be a much
faster and more accurate ripper than the Matshita could ever hope to be, and
there are many benefits to extracting to a file before burning, even if it
does take an extra step. Good work takes time.

One of the first upgrades, after memory, most of us have made is to replace
that reader with an "Apple-ROMmed" version that can use the Apple CD/DVD
driver. If you can find one, go for it; it just makes life so much simpler.

Many on this list recommend Intech's "CD/DVD Speed Tools".

the Matshita to virtually any SCSI reader. [BTW, Plextor has announced that
they have discontinued SCSI readers.]
