Subject: [SM] Yikes! My J700......

Hi......

I've just moved with my J700. Seemingly not a 'hard' move. Afterward, the computer was
just sitting there for about 5 days. When I set-up and tried to start'er'up, the hard
drive was beeping, etc. (like, I assume, it should) but the monitor wasn't responding.

I took the hood off the J700. First of all, there's a replacement hard drive in it...
a 20-gig. It's 'loose' in that compartment since the mounting holes don't line up. I
checked the connections and everything seems snug.

I unhooked the Nokia monitor... and the screen glowed, a sign that it is 'alright',
right?

I'm suspicious because there's no 'musical tone' at startup. The hard drive speeds up,
its light comes on, it blinks and beeps... but no musical tone... and certainly no
response from the monitor.

Nothing different when I put a Startup Disk in the floppy drive. Nothing different
when I startup with the Mac 8.5 CD in the drive.

I was told to move the video card to a different slot. I did. It didn't change
anything.

I don't know much of anything about computer stuff. I'm a graphics designer who just
doesn't know hardware. I'm thinking that this is a simple 'fix' for some of you
folks... but I'm LOST... SERIOUSLY LOST.

I'm hoping that you will recommend something that I will understand. Please! (Thanks,
in advance)

......Hal

Wow! It's SO kind of you folks to reply to my posting.

>> Try the battey and let me know if it solves the problem.<<

Well, something 'weird & wonderful' has happened. I kept searching for information on
possible solutions to my problem. I came across a Mac User Group site that had a
'newsletter' posted as a '.pdf' file. One article, by someone named Tim Sullivan,
talked about key commands "while starting up."

Now... my computer HAD been plugged in for a day or so (I don't know if that would
have 'juiced' the internal battery), but when I used the 'Command + Option + Shift +
Delete' key command at startup, the computer actually DID BOOT UP! I was shocked. It
asked me if I wanted to "Rebuild the Desktop" on my MAIN startup disk. I WAS SHOCKED!

I okayed the rebuild... and also the rebuild of the secondary internal hard drive.
Then I restarted using the secondary drive as the main startup... ran Tech Tool on the
'real' main drive... and everything passed. I selected the 'real' main as the startup
disk, SHUT DOWN COMLETELY (readying myself for the REAL test), and started the
computer.

Everything worked just fine!

So, I'm hoping that things really ARE okay. Do you think I should still change the
battery?

Again, thank you SO VERY much for your assistance. I don't know much of ANYTHING about
hardware stuff. That's such a problem at times like this... when the 'solution' might
be VERY simple.

Please advise me about the battery.

Thank you again...... Hal
