You shouldn't get the black screen of death if you're using XPostFacto to boot into your OS X partition. Using the Startup Disk control panel is definite no-no, and will corrupt the NVRAM, causing the black screen every time. You only mentioned the 2 gig hard drive... Are you installing both OS X and OS 9 on that drive? I'm not familiar with the Sonnet utility, but it must use a method for booting into X too, since using the Startup Disk cp is not workable. You can use the Startup Disk pref panel to boot from X into OS 9, but not the other way around. My vote is for trying again with XPostFacto since it's worked for so many of us.
