You can use a PCI ethernet card just fine in the C600. The problem is 
more than likely that the guy installed a PC ethernet card instead of a 
Mac compatible. That or he forgot to load the drivers. I've never heard 
of OvisLink.

Using a CommSlot card just frees up your PCI slot. If you ever got 
around to installing a Firewire card and a USB card, those slots become 
precious.
