No, there should be no difficulty at all exchanging files between an
S900 running OS 9.1 and a newer Mac running OS-X. You just set up
AppleTalk to connect via Ethernet on the S900. Then you go to chooser
and select AppleShare. The names of networked machines should show
up; you choose one; type in user name and password; and choose
volumes from the OS X machine to mount. Thereafter, you can have one
or more of the new machine volumes mounted on your S900 desktop. You
can share files by drag and drop.

I run OS X on my daughter's S900 these days. But I ran 8.6 and then
9.1 for a long, long time; even after I'd updated my own G4 Tower to
OS X. File exchanging was a breeze. Once you've networked your S900
in and have given file exchange a try, if you have any difficulty,
I'd be glad to walk you through any problems. Good luck.
