First, let me thank the many Mac and SM experts that post to this list. If only I understood half of the info available here!
System: S900 w/PowerLogic G3/350/512K/PCI, not overclocked, 400MB RAM, 3 2MB internal SCSI HDs, no external drives. Twin Turbo video card. No other PCI cards. Q1. Have been sucessfully running OS 8.1 from one HD for years, but it is not quite as stable with the G3 as it originally was with the 604e. For months now, Using a second HD, I've been able to clean install OS 9.1 from the Apple install CD, but 9.1 has never run sucessfully for more than a few days before an increasing corruption results in total failure of the 9.1 system. I have low level formatted (HDT 4.5) the drive many times prior to clean installing 9.1, with never a format error nor install problem. Currently, the machine hangs, extensions on or off, when attempting to start up on 9.1, no applications installed. Currently I have tried a minimum 9.1 install, rather than the full compliment of installers on the disk, a custom install of only OS 9.1, Internet Access, Mac OS Java Runtime, and Color Sync, with the same results. Have I missed an essential here? What am I doing wrong? Could the CD be bad? Q2. Thinking that I should update the Epson SC 1520 printer drivers, I down loaded their latest driver and update. After installing these, the Chooser will no longer retain a printer selection after closing the Chooser window, in either OS. Any ideas? Q3. Using a cable modem with IE 5.1.6 and OE 5.0.6, a down load or navigation on the web starts out fast but usually slows rapidly to low bits/sec rates, or just ends up waiting for download data and eventually dropping the connection. Wife's PC is very fast on the same modem. I believe that the problem is in the SM. Ideas? Q4. What is an acceptable max. processor chip temp. for the G3? Thanks for your insight, I envy you guys who are light years ahead of me! Bernie -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
