I think I would test the ram chips with Ramometer or TechToolPro and
the scsi setup with Integrity from Intech (or just visually if there are
jumpers there that shouldn't be) for a start...see if there are any
read/write errors.

Could be related to the faulty ram/scsi in that preferences cannot
