Dear List,

Just last week as I was playing with switching between my new
lightweight On the Go Firewire hard drive from OWC (bus powered for S-900,
power supply for power book) and the older Mercury Elite Pro (much heavier,
non portable, power supply only) the power supply on the Mercury went. I
fortunately have another drive of this type with the same power supply, but
it cost twenty five dollars to replace it. There are various variable power
supplies at Radio Shack and Office Max that I thought about replacing it
with but was nervous about doing so, since the one that comes with the
Mercury Elite Pros has an output that does not correspond to any that I
read and I don't understand the problems of amperage. The input is listed
as 100-240 v 0.8A 50-60HZ (that I understand make it possible to use both
in Europe and here) but the output is listed as +12V -- 2A. Does that mean
that using a Radio Shack or Belkin power supply rated as being able to put
out either 300 Amps or 500 Amps respectively, would hurt the drive?
Technical help at OWC which kept me waiting for half an hour proved
incompetent at answering such questions. Are there other places to order
appropriate power supplies should the replacement go? These units seem
rather flimsy. I was only two months past the one year warranty.
Another question. Trying to run the bus powered On the Go as second
or third in the chain seemed impossible and it doesn't want to run on the
power supply when it is in the chain connected to the S-900. Only by
putting it first in the chain will it work. Since it is "on the go" and
therefore likely to be taken on and off, this is just a bit inconvenient.
Any ideas, experience?

        Mark
