Keith,

I'm assuming that the zip drive is bootable (I know that jaz drives are).

a) you can hold down command-option-shift-delete at start-up to force
the machine to boot off the next partition (which should be the zip)

Under the Control Panel, I can select the zip as the startup disk but
that doesn't seem to have any effect at all. Tried the "command
option shift delete" and no response other than the icon of the
diskette with a flashing question mark. I held on for a full minute
and got nothing. As soon as I let go, I could hear the hard drive
start spinning and it came up shortly thereafter.

b) you can unplug the 2GB and see if the machine will boot off of the zip

I think that your system folder is not 'blessed'. Check the icon to see
if it looks like a system folder and not a regular folder. You can try
dragging the System file out of the 2GB system folder, then dragging the
system file out of the zip's folder, then replacing the zip file then
the 2GB file. There is a utility called System Picker that will bless a
certain system folder without all the gymnastics described here, but I
can't seem to find it on apple's ftp site.

Tried switching system files and it didn't change anything - both
system folders look the same, both system files look the same. They
have the face of the OS on them. Although each one says it has over
11 MB, when I open them up all I see is a bunch of countries names
and a 2K folder size but the whole list sure doesn't add up to over
100 K let alone 11MB. Something sure isn't blessed, anyway. Will try
option b tomorrow. Do you/does anybody know the way to hook up the
SCSI dock to the C500 in the event option b doesn't work. The zip is
hooked into a USB adapter card I installed. Is that a source of a
problem recognizing it as a drive?
