Keith, Regarding your new drive.
1- No you can not use the USB type of Zip as a start up on the C500. This is because it is connected via the USB PCI bus that must first be driven by the system start up USB drivers set 2 - Not all versions of the system installer are compatible with the C600/ C500. I think you mentioned that you have a G3 / system disk or something like that ???? Chances are it's not going to allow you to install. You must have a full retail version of a system disk to install. 3 - Having spent many long nights configuring C600/ C5's a few tips : Boot using a OEM Umax system disk or a OEM install OS8 or even 7.5. With luck one of these will recognize your new hard drive as part of the set up process, but at times the IDE bus of the C600/C500 machines gets confused. I believe this is related to the Cuda/ Pram issue so you may need to pull the battery wait an hour or so and retry (don't forget to press the cuda) and do this with the machine unplugged. If she starts but still refuses to pick up the new IDE drive, check the drive jumpers. Many IDE drives have spin up, master vs slave, sector control etc.... issues that are directed towards PC :-( users that make it tough to get set just right, you will need to study the settings and set up to match your old drive. The Apple OEM drive set up utility started to pick up IDE drives around OS8.1 ish as Apple started using IDE drives on several machines around that point, but if the set up you would use refuses to see the drive, you may need a third party utility such as Hard Drive Speed Tools. 4 - The C5 & C6 use the same basic mother board. On the board is a 50 pin SCSI connector, I keep a small 500mb hard drive handy with a basic system just to plug into the connector it has format utilities on it just for these occasions. A small drive like this can be found at thrift shops ( you may need to purchase a complete $ 10 LC11) but it would have a cable etc..... 5 - With limited ram (144) OS 8.6 is nice and stable running most apps, as you get to OS 9+ the system gets to be quite a pig with the ram and you may or may not be happy depending on what your running. 6- The chances are good that after you get it sorted out the CD drive will not work as has been detailed to death on the list - Fix by updating the drivers Hope this helps, Frank - Long Beach, CA -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
