Alan, I have already shared my Asante experience with you, off list. But I will comment here, for the rest of the list. I am delighted with our Asante wireless router. It is the FR1004AL, which has 4 wired ports, wireless capability, and a parallel printer port. I liked the one we use at home so much I did not consider anything else when we switched the business over to DSL and a router. I read the manuals, otherwise I can not figure anything out. I like having a "real" printed manual instead of a bunch of PDF files, and various "late breaking updates" that I have to print out in order to read. Asante's 66 page User's Guide is outstanding. It includes detailed info for OS 7.6 through 10.2 They even included info about Gimp-Print and Ghostscript . Their comments "Although Asante does not provide technical support for these third-party programs, a copy of these programs is provided on the FriendlyNet FR1004 Series CD-ROM." I have only contacted Asante's Tech Support people once. It was to ask a question about the way my Newton was recognized on the router. It uses a Skyline wireless PCMCIA card, but shows up as something using an AirPort card. The quick and friendly Tech person answered my question! I am not the brightest bulb in the box. I had zero problems with the Asante router, and our mixed bag of equipment. We have the following working: UMAX c600 via Asante PCI card - 9600 via original equipment Ethernet port - Powerbook 3400 using a Skyline PCMCIA wireless card - Lombard G3 using an Xsense wireless PC card -OrangeMicro Orange PC (living in the 9600) - Newton 2100. Alan, you should be able to pick and choose the equipment you like from various suppliers and get it all working together. Other than the Asante PCI card in the c600 and the router, we don't have two pieces of hardware from the same manufacturer. And, I have mixed four different operating systems. (Mac OS 9.1, Jaguar, Windows 98, Newton 2) The wireless range is good, and the signal is strong. The signal strength at the shop amazed me. The router is in the basement, along with the phone entrance bridge, the security system, and the like. This old building has three-foot-thick stone walls and hardwood floors with two subfloors. I have no problems using a wireless card in the laptop, anywhere in the store. At home we are using Earthlink's DSL, and at the business SBC Ameritech"s DSL. The usual "I don't work for Asante" disclaimers apply... they did give me a $20 rebate though ;-) Nancy -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
