> what doe the list suggest for 52x? Firewire or USB?

My vote, if you go external, is FireWire. Unless you can find a way to
get USB 2.0 going on a pre-OS X box you won't get anything faster than
USB 1.1 performance (4X) regardless of the USB drive you may be
contemplating. FireWire.

I would suggest also consider some of the 48X or 32X drives. You pay a
premium for 52X and you won't notice a difference between it and 48 or
probably a bit less. Consider also that when you burn audio CDs you
either have to slow down the burn speed to roughly half or the "burn
proof" technology all new burners seem to come with will do it for you.
So, half of 52X isn't much better than half of 40X.

I bought an internal TDK 48X (4800B) at Best Buy for less than $50
after rebate and a case at Computer Geeks for about $40. Toast loves
it, as does OS X's (on an iMac) Disk Burner, with a small hack. Not
sure if you could get OS 9's Disk Burner to recognize it however. All
told I spent around $100 and "rolled my own" and saved about $50 or so
at the time.

But if you're starting from scratch you either want one that comes
supported by Disk Burner (which can be made to run on legacy Macs under
OS9) or comes with Toast Lite, or add Toast (full version, sometimes
found for as little as $50 or so) to your purchase outlay.
