[SM] 68 pin drives

So I just recently came across a hard drive box ($5) with two 68 pin 
drives in it. It also has 68 pin connectors on the outside. Four of 
them! I opened the box and the connectors are wired in pairs so it 
appears you need two cables running in for both drives to work. Also you 
would need either two cables running out to other devices or two 68 pin 
terminators, I guess. Why would the box be wired this way? Why not just 
have them wired the way 50 pin boxes are: one in and one out?
