As was mentioned, you are right and the recording software has gain
controls. It's important to use these wisely. Too low might not result
in the hiss you're used to if say, you were to set the gain on your
cassette deck to low.

But setting gain too high on the computer will be nasty unless the
recording software covers your rear with compression. In general, most
LPs don't have enormouse dynamic range so set your gain high enough to
have realistic playback but DO NOT go "into the red" in that way that's
"OK" on your cassette deck. Digital recordings have zero headroom; you
don't have any leeway with this usually. 

I think you'll notice the red zone starts before "0 db" on much digital
recording software for this reason. Once you hit 0 db the rest is big
screechy distortion.

I like Eric's advice; sample some levels first. Look closly at your LP;
you can see what's a little louder by viewing the grooves...

Paul had it -- Coaster! That's what I was thinking of.

Ooh, didn't know that. Other Macs do this also? If so I've never seen a
way to turn it off --- if you're relying on the recording software to
override this how does it do it?
