snip ----- Paul - This is what I've done several times with the original 24X (non-Apple) Matshita drive.... (I have a 60gb IBM UltraStar 7200rpm IDE running on a Sonnet ATA 66 card. Also, my firewire drive also contains the same drive.) First of all, I use Hard Disk Speed Tools because the external firewire drive, so all drives are formatted with HDST so I can keep things all the same. I boot the machine using an external SCSI CD burner using a bootable CD - I usually use Disk Warrior with the #3 key pushed down so it boots in 9.1. Then I load the Apple OS 9.1 disc on the Matshita drive and do the installation. For reasons unknown, and I dont't care to investigate why, the installation doesn't work if I boot from the Apple CD loaded in the external drive. This does not involve any hacking and it's far more simple for me. I recently clean installed 9.1 to get rid of some clutter and worked fine as expected. Just mentioning my routine and I am not be any means advocating it. This hacking business just isn't worth the headscratching for me and doesn't do me any good because I need to use the external firewire hard drive. Good luck.
