Nah, I don't believe the motherboard's fried. When you start up with no
extensions the CD ROM won't wanna work anyway.

There is/are problems with some of those extensions or other software.
That's what causes the bombs. If you see the words, "Bus Error", then you
could have a hard disk/CD ROM/cabling/ROM.... conflict.

It's tedious, but start and turn off ALL extensions, then restart turning
them on one at a time until that crash occurs. You'll find your problem that
way. Or, if you own it, use Casady & Greene's Conflict Catcher and findit
that way.
