Will,

Wasn't certain if this came before or since we'd emailed each other off-list the other day.

If you are able to find a pc and have a dos boot floppy which you can
add the needed flasher programs to you can do the whole thing one step
on the PC.

I think this is my best hope, unless some magic PCI slot-swapping or CUDA miracle on the Mac side should finally allow the ATi ROM Update to "take" and quit giving me the error message. But it does in fact appear to see the card so I'm pinning my hopes in that direction just yet. Will nonetheless try some of that late tonight.

So no, I never see a progress bar. In other words it isn't as if it tries to work and seems to work but later I find out it hadn't. And to think I'd feel some success if I could only get THAT far.

Since my second borrowed PC will also not boot at all with the half-flashed card installed (for those playing along at home, I "successfully" flashed a known-working card on a PC with that part of the Mac ROM that supposedly allows the ATi ROM Updater to complete the transaction later on a Mac) I will have to wait a few days until I can get a PC that has: 1. no motherboard video, and 2. a non-ATi video card before trying it again. If it boots in that scenario you can bet your sweet bippy I'll be doing the entire procedure on the PC and to hell with using the ATi ROM update on the Mac side!

Gee, why should scamming "the system" be so difficult? :)
