I have a funny feeling I've fried the audio portion of my c600.

I just got an HP 9210i CDRW and installed it in my SuperMac c600 running OS 9.1. I tried Retrospect Express 4.3 and it did a great backup. I also installed a copy of Adaptec Toast 4.1.2 it ran smoothly. All in all, I'm quite pleased with the 9210i. However...

... I also put in the audio cable supplied with the 9210i. A couple of days later, I noticed that my audio wasn't working (sometimes I mute the audio, so it wasn't a big surprise). However, I noticed that when I launched Palm Desktop 4.0, I'd get a message "Unexpected error #-201". I looked it up on <AppleErrorCodes> and it said -201 was "notEnoughHardware, Insufficient hardware available [no more channels for the specified synthesizer]". Curious, but didn't quite click. I noticed that the audio was still off, so I went to the Sound Control Panel and got the message "The settings for the sound input source cannot be adjusted because the device is in use by another application" and there were no devices in the "Input" tab. I thought it was an extension problem, so I reinstalled extensions -- no difference, same message on sound control panel. When I tried to run a QuickTime movie (I have a G3/400MHz Sonnet accelerator -- very pleased!), I got another message: "You may experience problems playing a sound track in '1984.mov' because there is no audio hardware available on your computer. Would you like to close the movie or continue?" Okay, this is serious. So I suspected it was the audio cable, so I opened the c600 and disconnected the audio cable and restarted the c600. Same messages. I took out the 9210i and replaced it with my original CDROM (OEM for c600) and the original audio cable. Boxed up the c600 and got the same error messages.

I'm hoping against hope that there's a 1/8 W resistor that acts as a fuse and not an IC that I have to replace. If I've really fried something that I'm not going to be able replace, are there any audio cards I can install? I looked up the archives and found a reference to a similar problem on a audio daughtercard that might be loose (on an S900 back in October). Is there something similar on the c600?

Any advice is most appreciated.

TIA,

Herb
