... Try something simple, pull the PRAM battery, yank the power cable, and press the CUDA switch. Maybe something got screwed up, this can fix some kinds of voodoo, but your problem is new to me....

Thanks for the suggestion. I yanked the power cable, opened the c600, pulled the PRAM battery and pressed the CUDA switch a couple of times. Put everything back, started up and still no audio.
I also did a quick look around the board with a flashlight to see if there were any obvious problems (burn marks or loose connectors) -- no obvious found. (It was kind of done blind as I don't have any schematic drawings of the board, so I don't know where the audio processing lives....)
All other suggestions are most appreciated.
