Last night I picked up an external Firewire/USB enclosure and installed a
Pioneer A05U DVD-R(W) burner into it. Hooked it up to my S900's VST
Firewire/USB card and here are the results:

1) Toast Titanium v5.1.3 and Jam v2.5 recognized it right off the bat.

2) A burned DVD-R with data on it mounted on the desktop immediately.

3) Retrospect Express v4.2 doesn't see it; I may try v4.3 w/newer drivers to
see if that does it, although the Dantz site info is a little unclear on
whether this will work or not.

4) I can't get Apple DVD Player v2.7 to work. I have followed the
instructions to the "T" on "OS9 Forever" site - used TomeViewer to extract
all of the components, put the extensions in the system folder, rebooted the
computer, and ran the Apple DVD Patcher. When I try to launch Apple DVD
Player, it comes up with the message "Apple DVD Player cannot find software
it needs. Try reinstalling Apple DVD Player (201)". I did try doing the
reinstall a couple of times with no luck.

Anyone have an idea what software component(s) might be missing?

I understand that Apple DVD Player may be slow and clunky on my machine (if
I can get it to work), but the main reason I bought the DVD burner was to
work with DVD Studio Pro, and it needs the Player to preview. Other
alternatives?
