Although I have used the internal Zip drive only fleetingly while testing
a machine, my USB Zip drive hasn't given me any problems over the last 2
years. I have some Clik drives (anyone remember those?) that have
performed flawlessly under both Puma and Jaguar.

It helps to not install the Iomega software, it is typically crap.
