Restart your machine and hold down the Control and Option keys until your get a prompt asking if you want to rebuild your desktop. Disk First Aid is also a good thing and is a free Apple utility but very basic. Some of us like Disk Warrior for disc maintenance but you will need to find out if your built-in CD-rom drive is 'bootable'. http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ is a good resource.
