Check out Sonnet's site here: http://www.sonnettech.com/product/crescendo_pci.html That should answer your question.
I did. It doesn't.
Like anyone is surprised they can't get a straight answer from Sonnet?? While I'd like a faster cpu for my machine no way do I want to spend money with these fast talking shysters ;-). I know many of you are happy with their products but in many cases you could have done better IMHO.
Does anyone on this list have OS X working with a 700 or 800 mhz Sonnet card in an S900?
Dan
It would be good to know the answer to this. I do know that while a number of people have had issues with the G4 700/800 upgrades many people are using them in old world macs. How many with UMAX is unknown at this time. I went to the cpu info at xlr8yourmac.com and found 2 listings for the Sonnet G4 800 with a Umax S900. One person got it to work the other gave up. The main issue with old world macs and this upgrade seems to be with Ram. It looks like in many cases you need to replace all your ram with 128mb chips or at least Ram made in the last year or 2. This doesn't surprise me as with every cpu upgrade in speed using OSX ram chips that work fine in OS 9.x and at slower speeds fails to work correctly and gives all sorts of odd problems with the machine. None of my 70ns ram that came with my Umax machine works with OSX and speeds over apox 350MHz. I'm now running at 550 MHz so slowly I've been replacing ram chips with every CPU upgrade. Oddly all the old ram works fine in OS 9.x or with cpu speeds of 350 MHz or less. Powerlogix is suppose to be selling G3 800 & 900 MHz cards for our machines anyday now. I expect they will be more trouble free then the Sonnet's . I'd rather have a G4 but they are cheaper. There has been some talk that the current powerlogix G3 800 & 900 MHz Zifs for Beige & B&W G3's can be used in the Carrier cards and you use the jumper pins on the G3 Zif rather then the Carrier cards controls . But not heard any for sure reports yet Will S
