A friend of mine has a 6500. He upgraded the OS from 8.1 to 8.5.
Now the machine will go all the way through the start up and show a
desktop. When he tries to do anything with it, it says "finder error,
system bus". He has re-installed 8.1, but has the same problem. He's
run all the usual utility programs, to no avail.
Is the 6500 similar to my C600? Does it use a 603 processor? Do
any of you have ideas about how to fix this problem?
Most generally, this is caused by installing over the previous system instead of doing a clean install. I can leave remnants of the old system that is not compatible with the upgrade.
Do a clean install of 8.5 and see if the bus error is still there. If not, then start moving the control panels, extensions and preferences required by the programs they you run from the previous system folder to the new system folder.
