Try choosing "Remote Only" option in the...I think.....Apple Talk control
panel.
It's been a while since using my 56k modem but this selection plays an
important role in keeping the printer/modem connections happy.

Go to the Extensions Manager and activate "Remote Only", which is part of
Apple Remote Access control panel.

I am assuming you are using Remote Access for the dial-up ?
