I have a Umax 600-603e/240 with the original IDE 2 gig drive and a SCSI 4
gig drive, 112 mb of ram, ix3D video card, internal modem, original CD,
running OS 8.1 on the SCSI drive and the original OS 7.6 on the IDE drive.
Both systems have been remarkably stable. So, why rock the boat?

I would very much like to start rescuing my faithful UMAX machine from
oblivion (e.g., so I can install a USB PCI card to use USB devices, as well
as my digital camera, etc.). To start, I need to get to at least system
8.6.

However, it's proving difficult. I can't bring myself to buy OS 8.5 for
$139, as advertised at one online site, when the machine itself is probably
not worth that amount. My wife's imac has system 8.6, but when when I click
on the installer, after starting up in system 8.1, it says, basically, this
OS will not run on this machine and then shuts down the installer.

Questions:

1.) Is there any way to install the [imac] OS 8.6 on this machine? Any
work around?

2.) Will the original CD-Rom device (Matshita Cr-506) still
work, assuming I can upgrade to OS 8.6 (or 9.0)?

3.) If my imac version of 8.6 will not work, are there any sources for 8.5
(I have the update to 8.6 on another CD) that cost less than, say, $40?

4.) My sister bought OS 9.0 to update her G3 (and now she has moved on to
system 10.1). Will system 9.0 (with updates) run on this machine WITHOUT
the Sonnet G3 L2 accelerator?

I know these are pretty elementary questions for most of you but I live in
a rural area and advice, even though I am willing to pay for it, is far
away. I sure would appreciate some help. (I have in my attic a Mac 512
Plus, an Mac SE, a Performa 600, a Quadra 450, so I am trying to avoid
putting one more Mac away to gather dust, rather than bite the dust at the
county dump).
