Clicking Optimize resulted in an attempt that only got through the first pass then went directly to writing the backup info and quit. Subsequent attempts resulted in a "Not sufficient Memory" notice.
The HD opens and displays the files in correct Alpha-Num order with proper small Icons, Size, Kind and Version are proper. Cmd-D will duplicate files, but Cmd-C will not copy. I clicked on an extension and got the notice that this was an Extension etc. I opened a PIC file and attempted to copy it to the Clipboard. Cmd-A highlighted the the open Pic but Cmd-C just causes the Edit Menu to Flash but will not then copy (Cmd-V) to Simple Text. I cannot drag files from the open HD window, they just spring back. Sherlock will search the drive and display the results but the results are not available for use. The HD window now remains open and will not allow any other operation to proceed. I have to unplug the drive so I can work. Clicking the Close Box or Cmd-W does nothing. Put-Away results in the standard warning question " Continuing will remove HD from Desk Top, But HD will return on next Start-Up". I click OK. Then nothing. But I only waited three or four minutes and Forced Re-start with Shut Down on Re-Start. So I could work. Then popped the case and unplugged the drive. Data Rescue Demo did tell me that all 19,728 files were available for retrieving. But Data Rescue Demo would not display the opened HD to show all files. I may not have waited long enough for any action to occur. But how can I disable the setting(?) that opens the HD window on start up? I would be able to run the full version of Data Rescue(if I buy it) if I can get that window closed. I do not have an external ATA Box that I could use to keep the HD from mounting on start-up. Is there some other way to keep an internal HD from mounting at Start-Up? I do have some external SCSI boxes but would have to change connectors and cables ( messy work ). Is it safe to plug the power into an ATA Drive when the plug is HOT? I wouldn't think so!! But Hey--. I am stymied!! TIA, ernie >> Ernie, Don't you have Disk Warrior or Norton? If not I may be able to send you a copy that will work unless you are running OS 10X. Send me a message off line-direct and give me your address. Sybil A, Melhorn 810 N.
