Hi all,
Back to the original Firewire vs ATA133 to connect a Pioneer DVR-106 to my S900, I took Will's advise and ordered the ATA133 today from OWC.
The card and the DVR are supposed to be here Monday. OWC tech support assured me it would work and also supported the decision to go ATA133 over a firewire box. I only have one PCI slot open, the bottom one and I plan to start there with the ATA133. I will let you know how things unfold.
BTW, on my Tempo ATA66 card, it has two connectors on it to attach cables to drives. I have only one of the connectors occupied with my boot drive (Maxtor 120g) and a slave (Maxtor 33g). When I was playing around with different combinations to try to get the DVR to work with the ATA66, I moved the cable from the occupied connector on the ATA66 to the unoccupied one. When I tried to reboot, I got a message from Apple saying the system software would only work on the original drive it was installed on, and could not be copied to another disk. I put the cable back onto the original connector on the ATA66 and it booted fine.
I was planning to put this boot drive that is now on the ATA66 onto the ATA133 when it arrives on Monday, however, I am anticipating problems with the system, given the message regarding it working only where it is originally installed. My question: is there a way to trick the system into letting me put the drive on the new card without going through the system software reinstallation process? Is there a ResEdit tweak that anyone knows to disable this function of the system?
Also, something that came into my awareness recently is that the ATA66 card needs a special ATA66 cable to "take advantage of the ATA66 technology." The standard EIDE cable is only 40 conductor and the ATA66 cable is 80 conductor. The standard cable only supports ATA33 drives. Sure enough, I was running my drive through a standard cable. Digging through my parts box I came across a cable stamped ATA66, and when I changed out the cable, it seems that my computer has had a big speed boost. It seems to boot faster and operations seem to take less time. I don't know if this is my imagination or not. The drives are 7200.
Thanks Will (and Jeff indirectly) for the suggestions helping me to make the better decision on the firewire/ATA133 dilemma.
