Hi everyone, I apologize in advance for the length. I hope some can help me slow this drive down.
A few weeks ago, I posted questions about my "dead" 2G hard drive in my J700. I ended up purchasing a 9G Fujitsu M294ESP. Since installing it, I have been unable to get it to work reliably. I contacted Macresq for guidance and they have responded several times. I just don't fully understand their guidance. I'm hoping someone here know this drive and can provide some assistance. Included below is some of the ongoing correspondence between Macresq and me. I recently purchased a 9G Fujitsu SCSI drive from your company. It was order #116930. It arrived on 12/1 and I installed it later that day to guarantee that it was not DOA as suggested on the packing. After installation, it did not show up so I wasn't sure if is was formatted or not. Used Hard Disk Toolkit 4.5 to mount it but it would still not show up and initialization was recommended. I did that with a quick process as an HFS+ disk. All went fine and it showed up as an FWB 8.4 G drive. I tried moving a few small files to the disk which worked Ok so I thought everything was fine. Last evening I started to move some of my files around and attempted to move several to the new disk. The results were erratic. Most smaller files moved successfully but not all of them. Almost all of the large files ran into problems. This involved files from both another internal hard disk and CDs. When unstuffing a few files with Stuffit I most often got the message "(I/O Error-Bad Media)" When moving unstuffed files I most often got the message "Item cannot be written because a disk error occurred" This does not occur when I try to move the same files between partitioned volumes on the existing hard drive. I tried reformatting the new Fujitsu with the slower 4 hour process including verification. The reformatting went fine but when I try to add files to the disk, I get the exact same messages. Could there be a problem with the "new" HD? Can you recommend any ideas or what I should try next? RESPONSE If it's an 80 pin hard drive with an adapter, try running it between 2 devices internally so it'll get the proper termination. If externally, use a block terminator (active, with a LED). Also, if you can find the jumper settings for that on the Fujitsu site, try placing a jumper on something called "Force Single Ended" or "D-Target INIT". Is sounds like a speed issue, where the drive is trying to send and receive data pulses at SCSI 3 sped, but since it's in a SCSI 1 or 2 chain it wigs out. The aforementioned jumpers slow down the data pulses going to and from the drive and fix this issue. RESPONSE FROM ME Thanks for the follow-up. But I hate to say it did not help me a great deal. I went to the Fujitsu site and found the model M2949ESP. Unfortunately, I could find nothing like "Force Single Ended" or "D-Target INIT" mentioned anywhere on either their catalog or jumper setting page. Does the fact that an adapter was used make things different? It is the 80 pin drive with the included 50 pin adapter. It is in the middle of the SCSI chain. Does the jumper you mention go on the drive itself or on the 80 to 50 pin adapter? Again, your help is greatly appreciated. RESPONSE FROM MACRESQ The jumper goes on the drive itself. What SCSI devices do you have? What are their Ids? Yes, that drive must not be the last thing in the chain or it'll do all sorts of weird things. Does Drive Setup see it as an "Unsupported" drive? You need to format it with something other than Drive Setup, however, it's a great program to use to see if the machine sees the drive or not. RESPONSES FROM ME On SCSI bus 0 there are 9G Quantum drive at ID2, original CD drive at ID3, new 9G Fujitsu at ID4, On SCSI bus 1 there are scanner at ID1, zip drive at ID5, and CD-RW at ID6 To give the new drive an ID, I did use the jumper on the adapter as identified on the little sheet that came with it. At the end is the original 2G Quantum drive which died. That is the reason for adding the new drive. I believe its ID was SCSI 0, ID0 The new Fujitsu was formatted with FWBs Hard Disk Toolkit 4.5. The new drive is recognized by HDT, Apple System Profiler, and Drive Setup. It is not supported by Drive Setup, though. Again, the drive reads and writes but is erratic. I believe that you are on the right track in that the drive might be too fast but I've yet to figure out how to get it to slow down below SCSI 3. LAST RESPONSE FROM MACRESQ Anything like "Force SE" or "Force Single Ended" will slow it down. -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
