As for your recent incident, not all UPS provide voltage stabilization, (not to be confused with surge/spike protection.) For me, this is a far more important feature then the UPS/surge/spike portion of a battery backup. I am a firm believer in this because of the potential long-term/cumulative damage caused by power fluctuations. This is dispite the fact that our computer setup is run on a dedicated 20-amp circuit fed from a 200-amp panel. Although computer power supplies probably have some sort of safety feature built-in, it's not a bad idea to add another layer of protection. I am not plugging any particular brand but some folks on this list and myself use APC's BackUPS Pro series. I have noticed some other brands touting voltage stabilization feature on their UPS units. Another product to consider are line conditioners, such as APC's Line-R, which does not provide batter backup.
