I am now able to access the Canon digital camera via USB tether. Ended up using Shirlock to weed out all Canon related files and reinstall the Camera software for OS 9. (Turns out none of this is necessary if running X.) Didn't have to change/add/delete any Apple USB related extensions that were installed. Thanks to everyone who replied to my distress post.
