I was wondering if you guys could help.
My little sister bought this ALPS ALOS Masterpiece Model 2300 Mac type printer off of eBay. This thing has Scsi ports on it.
My knowledge of SCSI printers are limited. I told her to check into getting a SCSI card for her evil PC. Apparently these from the manufacturer cost $300.
This doesn't make sense to me. There have to be cheaper ones available. Or should I steer toward goodness light and buying a used s900?
I have no specific knowledge about that printer, but if all it lacks is a SCSI card for the PC, then they are available for very little money. The Adaptec 2906, which also works on the Mac, is a cross-platform card. This is true because there are no drivers stored on the card, so whether it is Mac or PC is just a matter of which drivers (extensions) you throw into the OS.
I think it is well under $50. I've seen the 2910 or 2915 for about $5 used sometimes. The disadvantage of driverless SCSI cards is that you have to load stuff into the OS for them to work, and you can't boot off of devices connected to them, but that shouldn't matter for a printer.
If she has a really old PC which needs an ISA card, the Adaptec 1540CF was probably the best, and there should be a ton of those available for little money.
