I noticed in MacZone that you can get a Fantom Titanium 120 GB
firewire drive for $145. Acomdata has a 120 GB drive for about the same
price.
Are any of you familiar with these products? Do these companies
make a good product? Would I be better off with a firewire drive, or an
IDE drive on the PCI card?

Absent information about those specific products, Firewire drives are all actually IDE (EIDE, ATA) drives with a Firewire to IDE bridge connected to them. The bridge is a little circuit board.

If you can find out the model of hard drive and the type of bridge then you can make a decent guess about the quality. I guess the power supply is also a factor if the external box has a power supply in it.

Each bridge is based on one of a limited number of chips, and there are opinions (with which I am not familiar) about the quality and performance of the various available chips. So the bridge matters as well as the model of drive.

I would tend to avoid any product where the manufacturer won't tell you the models of components that they are using. This could mean that they just use whatever is cheapest and available that week. It might not, but you don't have any way of knowing otherwise if they won't tell.
