Hi Kim, I actually had this yesterday morning at bootup while testing a cdrw. The reason for the circle w/ line thru it in my case was that my Siig/Acard didn't like the drive. But when I put it on my VST Ultratek, it booted up fine.
I am running Jaguar 10.2.8 and I assume the error is indicative to any OSX version. I guess that you could be looking for is some sort of bus error as one possibility, or compatibility of a given drive on a given ata/pci card as another. Of course there could be another variable too...
