I have a S900 connected to a hub, which is connected to a cable modem. I
have a machine I am loaning that I would also like to connect to the net. It
has OSX 10.3 on it. I connected an ethernet cable from it to the hub and
hoped it would magically work, alas no.

ANy help will be greatly appreciated.

You need a router in between the modem and the hub. If you get a one port router you still need to hub. With a four port router you can eliminate the hub.
