Here's one that has me stumped.

Last week I took my OWC Mercury Elite firewire hard drive in to school
(where I work) to do a project on DVD Studio Pro (OSX). When I brought the
drive back home and hooked it up to my S900, up popped some kind of message
about there being an "error on the disk, some data may be lost". The drive
appeared on the desktop, but whenever I tried to access it, it came up with
the error message.

The first thing I did was launch Disk Warrior 2.1 and started the repair it.
The repair process came up with several errors. When I selected to "Replace"
directory, the program crashed with an unexplained error; I tried several
more times with the same results.

Tried Techtool Pro, Disk First Aid, and Norton Utilities. They all crashed
at some point when trying to repair the disk. Somewhere in the process, the
disk became unrecognizable in these apps and would not even reformat!

I took the drive back to school to see if I could do anything under OSX.
Upon startup, the "Disk unrecognizable - do you want to reformat" message
came up. This time I was able to reformat the drive and bring it back to
life.

When I got the drive back home, however, exactly the same thing happened ...
disk error message, etc.

I've done this dozens of times before without problems. Talking with one of
the tech people, one of the changes made this semester was a move to
Panther, which is putting up a red flag for me.

Has anyone read of problems with disk formatting issues between Panther and
earlier versions - in particular, Panther trashing directories on otherwise
working drives?

Any help would be appreciated (particularly work-arounds).

PS The OWC drive was formatted at the factory and had the Hard Disk Speed
Tools v 3.5 driver on it.
