Greg, Just a side thought just in case you or somebody else using external drives doesn't know, but is it possible that the drive is being removed w/o ejecting first? Just like with the old scsi drives, even firewire drives need to have their heads parked before shutting off. This can also happen if the computer was forced to restart from a freeze at some point. Then if the drive is jostled even a little, the damage can be done. I'm sure you already know this but figured I'd mention it just in case and for others benefit because plug-n-play is a misnomer without the ejecting first. Anyway, that can corrupt the directory or lead to media errors on a portable drive real easy. Only has to happen once and a drive sometimes never seems the same.
Also make sure the drive wasn't being formatted using HFS (as opposed to HFS+) under the older OS Setup Utility. Unlikely but another thought.
