Hello all. I run 8.I on my C600 (original was system 7.6 0r could be 7.6.1. I still have a copy of the original and also the application software) AND have this problem. I got the "?" symbol upon start up. I got this before but was always able to correct this by restart a time or two. This one did not go away. I ran Norton's no help. So using my Mac Dummy book I did all the easy things that were recommended with no help. Next came the hard thing to do that was to reinstall the system. I installed 8.0 but I forgot to check the option to uncheck the "update your Apple hard disk drivers." Then I updated to 8.1 that is now installed, and working. But now the CD ROM drive does not work so I can't install many items that were in the old system. I think all the drivers,FWB and CD-ROM tool kit, and much more are missing along with a lot of other things I need, and reside in a folder called "Previous system folder." According to the Dummy book, I should line up the two systems and one at a time transfer all the things missing from the Previous to the new system. Will take time, but can be done. Why can't I somehow use the Previous System Folder that has all my good stuff? Do I have to trash the utilities folder that now says SCSI drives and no drive setup 1.3.1? And get a new one from some place on the original disks? What is the simplest way to get all my old system, control panels, extensions, etc., back? Back in time when I made my first question about updating beyond 8.1, I was offered a hacked driver by Mike to run the CD-ROM. I guess this is software on a floppy. Also, I was advised by Nancy to replace my UMAX CD ROM drive with an apple Romed one. This I think would be a hardware change and then it would not necessary to uncheck the box in the splash screen about not updating the Hard DiskDrivers when updating to a new system. I guess this replaces the original and installs in the same place??? How? I hope you all can make sense of all my rambling, and thanks for all the help in the past. Any one live in the FT. Worth /Dallas area? It would be great to get live help. Sincerely, Arnold (73 and going strong)
