I need to network my s900 to my C600. I hooked the C600 to a G4 tower by running a cable from the ethernet pci card in the c600 to the ethernet port in the G4. I assume that this can be done between my 900 and my 600 the same way, but it doesn't work. Neither machine shows up on the other. I assume that the ethernet card in the 900 is dead, since the 600 will hook to the G4.
Do you know what kind of ethernet card you have in the s900? A couple of quick & obvious questions...Is Appletalk turned on? Is Appletalk bound to the ethernet card? As to the card, when you plug in the cable, do you see any LEDs that light up? Most cards have LEDs that indicate an active connection so if no blinking lights then the card isn't active. Also, check the Extensions to see if appropriate extensions are active for your card (dependent on make/model); sometimes the Apple Enet extensions will be sufficient.
If you need a new card, SMC has been a good Mac friendly card maker. Asante has long been an Apple stalwart but they're more expensive. Any card with a Realtek 8139 chipset will work either in 9 or X.
Do only certain ethernet cards work with os10? Do some work with os10 and os9? Are some brands better than others? I assume I need a "crossover" cable to go directly from one to the other, right? I have a 10/100 hub made by DLink. I should be able to use regular cables with it, right?
Some newer cards have auto-sensing ports so you don't need to worry if you need the right cable. That said, since you have a hub just use that with regular cables and no worries.
