Depending on what you're running, you can easily format a firewire drive using readily-available, and free, 3rd-party formatting software for OS 9.x. I found something called Disk Control 1.1, it is available for free download here: <http://www.synchrotech.com/support-download/diskcontrol1.1.smi.bin> NOTE: above is a direct download link - clicking initiates a download! It worked fine in OS 9 using a portable firewire drive I assembled from a plastic case and a mail-order laptop drive. After I installed 10.2.8 onto my other computer (PowerMac 9600), I found that it, too, recognized the Firewire drive without any additional fuss.
